Zia’s Ristorante Perth

The south-eastern Perth hills area is severely lacking in good restaurant options, so I was quite excited to learn that Zia's Ristorante (the Italian translation for Auntie's Restaurant), a family owned and operated Italian restaurant, had just opened. Deep down I was desperately hoping that it would be one of the best Italian restaurants that I've eaten at, both for the benefit of the local [...]

The Merrywell Perth

The water feature at the outside entrance to The Merrywell As much as I love fine dining and trying the latest new intricate dishes coming out of the kitchens of some of the most revered chefs, I can't deny that I sometimes just feel like going to a pub for a tasty burger and chips. I still like to maintain a bit of [...]

Pearl Restaurant Bali

I've just returned from a short trip to Bali, the Indonesian island just north of Australia. I went expecting luxury beach side hotels, cheap food and cocktails, being hassled by the street vendors, and relaxing massages. Was I expecting modern French fine dining? Not at all! In his earlier years, Matsuhisa spent time living [...]

Food impeccable, and service so refined that it really does make the night an experience. As usual, once we were seated, a waitstaff gave us a very warm welcome, an overview of the evening, and a check to make sure there were no ingredients that anybody just couldn’t bear to stomach. We were also given the usual cryptic menu in an envelope, which just listed key ingredients without giving too much away. All part of the “amusé” theme. “Persimmon, coconut and artichoke”–huh?! I guess we’d have to wait and see...continue reading

Sushia Izakaya & Bar Perth

I mentioned in my introduction post that Perth is a rapidly developing city, and that means lots of new places to eat. One of the most recent additions to the CBD is Sushia Izakaya & Bar, located in Brookfield place at the foot of the BHP Billiton tower. An Izakaya is the Japanese answer to the pub--a laid back locale where people can go to [...]
